The study included 78 men and women with a higher body mass index (BMI) who fell into the overweight or obese category, and 105 men and women with a lower BMI.

BMI is a measurement of body fat based on height and weight. A higher BMI doesn't always mean higher body fat.

Participants filled out questionnaires that assessed symptoms of anxiety and depression, childhood trauma, sensitivity to common symptoms such as headaches and dizziness, food addiction, bowel symptoms, personality traits and other factors.

They also underwent three MRIs to assess brain structure and function, as well as connectivity between different areas of the brain.

The results showed that specific changes in brain connectivity were associated with higher BMI in both men and women.

This includes "changes in many areas of the brain that respond to food or food-related cues" that have been linked to early life trauma, the researchers wrote.

They also found that women with high BMI showed connectivity changes associated with greater anxiety and lower resilience than men with high BMI.

Other connectivity changes in women with high BMI suggest that women may have difficulty integrating emotions with action-oriented goal planning, the researchers wrote. They say this may lead to women being more susceptible to "emotional overeating" than men.

Additionally, certain brain changes suggest that women with a high BMI may be more susceptible to the visual, olfactory and taste effects of ultra-processed foods.
