The Biophilia Intruder has an axial resolution of 30 µm. The application of this device allows the study of the epidermis at the cellular and subcellular level.
Today, the research goals and limitations of 3D NLS ultramicroscanning in dermatology have become very broad.
The following has become a reality:
- Evaluate the effect of treatment in diseases characterized by skin sclerosis (localized scleroderma, generalized scleroderma), edema (lipoderma) and chronic inflammatory (psoriasis) dermatoses;
- measurement of skin tumor invasion and monitoring of surgical interventions, monitoring after cryo- and laser treatments of melanomas, basaloid carcinomas, hemangiomas, fibromas, seborrheic keratoses;
- Study of the effects of topical and systemic drugs on the skin (corticosteroids, estradiol).
According to the method, NLS supermicroscan diagnosis of dermatological diseases must be performed by comparing the affected area with the healthy skin of the contralateral homologous area.
In NLS imaging using a nonlinear sensor at a frequency of 4.9 GHz, normal skin is represented by three layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The regional and age-related properties of skin thickness are mainly determined by the thickness of the dermis, which is primarily determined by the collagen content in it.
It is believed that normal epidermis is poorly visualized in NLS studies with a sensor frequency of 1.4 GHz because the actual thickness of the epidermis is 0.02 – 0.5 mm, which is the resolution limit of such systems.
The epidermis is a moderately chromogenic structure (2-3 points on the Fleindler scale), the chromogenicity of which depends on the thickness of the stratum corneum and the rate of desquamation.
UHF nonlinear transducers can study more of the superficial papillary layer of the dermis and the underlying reticular layer, which is characterized by a more homogeneous structure.
For the differential diagnosis of skin tumors such as hemangiomas or melanomas, the modality of ultramicroscanning with spectral entropy analysis (SEA) can be successfully applied.
Biophilia Intruder has been widely used in various disease medicine.
